Honeybee
Honeybee was my band in Miami. Some things about Honeybee
were so surreal I’ll just have to leave out the details unless you just feel
you’ve got to know. Then ask me and maybe I’ll tell you. Anyways the band was
the brain child of our bassist and my best friend in Miami Fred Davenport.
Funky Fred was just an astonishing bass player, a damn good song writer, and an
all around terrific person. We went through a string of singers including Mabel, Trannel and Tranice the twins who you can hear in the background of Dancin’ to the Beat until we finally found Sue Brunet. Sue
was fabulous and had a gold record for a top 40 hit called “Easier Said than Done.” She also did music for TV shows including a Nickelodean kids show called “Leo the Lion.” She made he
start with our contributing keyboard player Mark Boccacio
– a real pro who produced and performed all of the music on 2 Live Crew’s first
album “2 Live is What We Are”. HE went on to do a bunch of soundtrack for
movies after we parted ways. The drummer of Honeybee on most tracks was Bill –
a superb funk player who had a lot of personal issues. Honeybee had a studio just off Lincoln Road on Michigan Ave and we had an entourage of 5
bands we toured and associated with. Like most bands, our demise was the result
of interpersonal issues within the organization and our difficulty with keeping
a drummer.
I sure loved those people. I really wish I could track down Fred
and Sue. Well, maybe someday we’ll meet again!
